Behind the tissue: Richard Lewis, Energy and Environment Manager

I have always been interested in geography, particularly physical geography, and the environment. I saw my role at WEPA as a fantastic opportunity and was impressed by the group’s sustainability values. There are so many small things we can do to make the world a better place environmentally, from design and manufacturing to our communications. That’s why I’m passionate about my job at WEPA, as I oversee and support innovation in sustainable manufacturing.

My day-to-day is really varied, from monitoring energy consumption to optimising papermaking – always adhering to strict permit limits on water and air emissions. I work closely with the safety department, which goes hand-in-hand with the work the environment team does.

Outside of work, I keep busy through sports. I recently ended 30 years of playing rugby but found ways to fill that time by coaching my son’s under 7’s team, setting up a junior cricket club and marathon training.

I’m also involved with a lot of charity work and events within my local community. I just recently completed my first marathon - the London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK - and raised over £2000! Last year we held an Oktoberfest and raised £13,000 for charity. I am enthusiastic about giving back, especially when you see the benefits first-hand, it’s a chance to get the community together, too.
