Future fibres

IT ALL STARTS WITH FIBRES

We aim to use raw materials with the best environmental performance based on the circular economy. Our objective is to establish hygiene paper products based on recycled fibres on the market, procure fibres from responsible sources and continuously develop our raw material portfolio via innovative alternatives.

Wood-based
virgin fibres

We source our virgin fibres from certified forestry and plantation management. Above and beyond certifications such as FSC and PEFC, we rely on our own criteria to establish new standards together with our suppliers.

Recycled fibres

We rely on recycled fibres from recovered paper and recycled cardboard, because recycled fibres are the most sustainable raw material for our hygiene paper products. As a recycling specialist, we primarily use recycled fibres for our brands, which is why we are constantly expanding our sources of recovered paper.

Alternative
virgin fibres

We promote sustainable alternatives to wood-based virgin fibres in order to reduce the ecological footprint of our products. One of these alternatives is miscanthus, a sustainable and locally grown grass.

A sustainable
raw materials cycle

Hygiene paper is produced from large quantities of wood-based virgin fibres, and this has a significant impact on land use and biodiversity. In view of climate change and the growing scarcity of resources it is important to utilise these raw materials as sparingly as possible and, regarding their extraction, to pay attention to ecological conditions. To prevent wood-based virgin fibres from being removed from the raw material cycle after single use, WEPA relies on the principle of cascade use.

Cascade use means that virgin fibres remain in the material cycle for as long as possible, and are only used as recycled fibres in hygiene paper products after having been used several times.

As well as traditional recovered paper sources such as graphic paper and packaging, WEPA has been using recycled cardboard in its products since 2022 and is setting new standards in the hygiene paper value chain.

Our goal: by 2030, all WEPA sales products should contain at least 60% recycled fibres and alternative virgin fibres*.

(*reference value: finished goods + semi-finished goods sold + de-inked pulp sold)

WEPA obtains 100% of its wood-based virgin fibres from FSC or PEFC-certified sources.

Our recycled fibres:
ecological top performers

Require 87 % less water than our virgin fibres

Require 78 % less energy than our virgin fibres

Local procurement and long-term security of supply

Protecting biodiversity and reducing pressure on land use

Sustainable hygiene paper portfolio

Sustainable portfolio development

We aspire to offer the most sustainable hygiene paper portfolio to help our customers in their success. To achieve this, we have developed an evaluation system and assessed our entire hygiene paper portfolio in terms of sustainability aspects. We use the results to identify opportunities for the sustainable further development of our product range.
