Behind the Tissue: Denise Hoffmann, Data Governance Managerin

As Data Governance Manager at WEPA I deal every day with structures, processes and, of course, data. But my main passion is creating something new with other people – something that didn’t exist before. That’s exactly what fascinates me about my hobby as well, which is acting in the theatre.

I’ve been part of an ensemble for many years at the open-air theatre in Herdringen – which is a small village near our headquarters in Arnsberg. It all began with a small role and quickly developed into a major passion. On stage I slip into really different roles: sometimes I’m a vampire, sometimes a wicked witch, at times cheeky or even vulnerable. It needs flexibility every time, and that’s why I love it. Each role shows me a different way of seeing things, they help me to understand people better and I can express myself.

At the open-air theatre I’m not only active on the stage, but I also work behind the scenes as the props manager. I make sure everything’s in the right place at the right time and that everyone in the team knows what’s needed and where they can find it. Organisation, decisive communication and a sense of responsibility are needed so that everything runs smoothly.

It’s these skills that are also really important in my job at WEPA. As the data governance manager I develop structures and processes to make handling data in the company efficient, secure and understandable. I pay attention that information is available where it’s needed and that it’s reliable, comprehensible and useful. I’m also the person who makes sure everything is ready in the background so that others can do their work well.

At the same time, the theatre gives me a lot of skills that I can put to good practice at WEPA. On stage I’ve learnt to keep calm even when the going gets tough, and to react flexibly – especially when things happen differently than planned. That then also helps me at work, in presentations for example, or when quick and spontaneous solutions are needed. My good sense of voice and posture, and the constructive handling of feedback, are also part of both my worlds.

What do I like particularly? The moment when something comes to life from an empty stage set and a few lines of text. Something that moves people. And that demands creativity, patience and a strong team. Every person is important – whether it's the lead role, the technical team or the ensemble. At the end of things, only together can something great be achieved, and that applies to the theatre – but also to WEPA. After all, here we’re also an ensemble made up of different characters with different backgrounds, but we have a common vision that we bring to life as a team. Together for a better life.

5 WEPA questions

What makes your work at WEPA so special?

It’s that I can create something that didn’t exist before, meaning I create something that supports the business and doesn’t just cause more work.

How do you personally balance your job?

On the one hand, with acting and singing of course. Singing in particular is totally liberating and it’s also a kind of sport. And on the other side, my family and my dog.

Why are WEPA and you the perfect match?

Because I like to work in a team on something that extends beyond pure numbers. At WEPA I have the feeling that we work together towards a meaningful goal with responsibility and by sticking together. That’s exactly my method of working.

What have you learnt at WEPA that’s also brought you forward personally?

To try out more and take risks, even if things don’t always work out right. But also to demand decisions.

What motivates you (at WEPA) every day?

Mostly my colleagues. I look forward to carrying on working on our ideas with them every day. What also motivates me is that I have the feeling that my tasks and my work benefit the company.
